Birthstones, Gems, and Gemstones

Birthstones are simply beautiful gemstones, also known as gems, jewels, precious stones or semi-precious stones, and include the Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. Gems are available in all colors of the rainbow including red, yellow, green, and blue. Birthstones are typically associated with a calendar month and are often purchased as jewelry to celebrate a birthday. There is no definitive nor official list of these birthstones - the list below, however, is fairly authoritative since it is adapted from the American Gem Society list and, with one minor exception, agrees with the American Gem Trade Association.
